28th of April (1853) I visited St.Helens, a very small village on the south bank of the Columbia River, about 30 miles below Portland, officiated there in the evening to a small congregation, and I could not find any Episcopalian in the place, but there were two or three at Milton, about two or three miles distant which place I visited the next day." That was the report from Reverend John McCarthy of the first Episcopal service in St. Helens, held in a small church shared by the Methodists and members of the Congregational Church.
